Sahra Wagenknecht: According to the survey, your own party could get 20 percent

If the left-wing politician Sarah Wagenknecht actually founded her own party, according to a survey, she would have high voter potential – especially in East Germany.

According to a survey, around one in five eligible voters could basically imagine voting for a new party led by the prominent left-wing politician Sahra Wagenknecht.

20 percent of the people surveyed by the opinion research institute YouGov on behalf of the German Press Agency answered a corresponding question with “probably yes” (14) or “yes, definitely” (6). 63 percent can’t (somewhat) imagine that. 17 percent answered “don’t know.”

It is important that this is not a forecast. The survey cannot say how many people would actually decide to vote for such a non-existent party. Only the general potential is shown.

Sarah Wagenknecht: The party has potential, especially in the East

According to the survey, this is significantly higher in East Germany, where 29 percent could basically imagine voting for a Wagenknecht party. In the West it is 19 percent. She could probably expect the most support from supporters of the Left Party (55 percent).

Of the AfD supporters, almost one in three (29 percent) could imagine voting for Wagenknecht, followed by the SPD and FDP supporters (21 percent each). For the representative survey, YouGov surveyed 2,134 people between September 15 and 20, 2023.

Wagenknecht has fallen out with the Left and criticizes the political direction of her party. She is toying with the idea of founding her own party. According to her own statement, she wants to make a decision on this by the end of the year.
