Germany urgently needs a breather when it comes to immigration, says Hesse’s Prime Minister Boris Rhein (CDU). Chancellor Scholz should finally make migration “a top priority”.
Hesse’s Prime Minister Boris Rhein (CDU) wants to bring forward consultations on refugee policy and is urging Chancellor Olaf Scholz to make the issue of migration a top priority. “We need a solution as quickly as possible to stop illegal migration to Germany,” Rhein told the star. “I expect the Chancellor to finally make migration a top priority.” Rhein criticized: “At the local level, the situation can hardly be shouldered. Instead, the situation in Berlin is being ignored and a dangerous policy is being formulated when it comes to migration, which is leading to further uncertainty among citizens.”
Boris Rhein: “The more refugees come, the more the federal government has to pay”
Like Lower Saxony’s Prime Minister Stephan Weil before him, Rhein stated that he wanted to discuss refugee policy earlier than previously planned. We now have to act quickly, he said. “Therefore, when Hesse takes over the chairmanship of the Prime Minister’s Conference in Frankfurt on October 12th and 13th, the Prime Ministers of the states will discuss this issue with each other.”
Rhein, who wants to defend his position as head of government in Hesse in the state elections on October 8th, also sees the federal government as having a responsibility to provide financial support to states and municipalities. According to the CDU politician, the federal government must “commit to greater financing of the costs for states and municipalities.” What is needed is a return to the “breathing system,” said Rhein star. “The more refugees come, the more the federal government has to pay. And the fewer refugees come, the less the federal government has to pay.” Rhein continues: “That’s only fair, because the federal government alone holds the key to controlling and limiting migration.”
Rhein called for a “clear separation” between asylum and labor migration. What is now needed, among other things, is an expansion of safe countries of origin to include Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and India, as well as border controls with Poland and the Czech Republic, as already exist with Austria. “That’s the only thing that works quickly now,” said Rhein. Germany needs now – “really now” – a breather on immigration.
