Conflict: Chinese maneuvers planned again in the Taiwan Strait

Recently, China’s military practiced with more than 100 aircraft off Taiwan. But that was probably just the beginning.

China wants to continue its military exercises in the strait between the People’s Republic and the island state of Taiwan. As long as the “provocations for Taiwan independence” continue, the People’s Liberation Army’s actions will not stop, Taiwan Affairs Office spokeswoman Zhu Fenglian said in Beijing. The training so far has served the goal of combating the “arrogance of separatist forces for Taiwan’s independence,” she explained.

The People’s Republic of China, ruled by the Communist Party, considers Taiwan to be part of its territory. However, the democratic island state with more than 23 million inhabitants has had its own government for decades.

Chinese military aircraft regularly fly over the Taiwan Strait

The Taiwan Strait – the strait between the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian and Taiwan – has recently been the scene of repeated Chinese military exercises. Chinese military aircraft flew through Taiwan’s air defense zone almost daily.

In the morning, the Ministry of Defense in Taipei reported that it had discovered 32 aircraft and 8 Chinese navy ships around Taiwan within 24 hours. 16 aircraft entered the air defense zone. However, the number was well below the previous peak on Monday last week, when the authority registered more than 100 Chinese military aircraft.
