The conservative opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo ran for the office of prime minister – but without success. What’s next?
A good two months after the new Spanish parliamentary elections, the conservative opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo failed in his first attempt to form a government. His candidacy for prime minister was rejected by the lower house in Madrid with 178 votes to 172.
On Friday, the 62-year-old has a new chance to replace the acting left-wing head of government Pedro Sánchez. But he also has little chance of winning a majority in the second round. It is expected that after Feijóo, Sánchez, who has been in power since 2018, will also make an attempt. Feijóo’s Popular Party (PP) won the July 23 election ahead of Sánchez’s Socialists (PSOE).
