The traffic light government’s planned cannabis legalization has not yet been passed by the Bundestag and Bundesrat – but Bavaria is already planning countermeasures. Before that, attempts will continue to prevent the law.
In the event of nationwide cannabis legalization, Bavaria wants to restrict consumption through its own measures. A “central control unit” is intended to “curb the consumption of this dangerous drug and prevent it as much as possible” through strict enforcement of the federal government’s cannabis law in the Free State, announced Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU) in Munich.
All possible legal steps should also be taken to take action against the law if it comes into force. “The Berlin traffic light project threatens the health of young people in particular,” said Holetschek.
On Friday, the Federal Council will have the opportunity to comment on the traffic light government’s plans for cannabis approval. Bavaria wants to “submit a plenary motion in the state chamber that will completely reject the draft law.”
“Turnaround in drug policy”
The traffic light government introduced the draft law for partial cannabis legalization in mid-August. Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) spoke of a “turnaround in drug policy” and was convinced that the black market could be curbed, drug-related crime could be combated and health protection could be increased.
The project still has to go through the Bundestag and Bundesrat. According to Lauterbach, it does not require approval in the state chamber and therefore cannot be stopped there.
