Berlin: Cleaning the Brandenburg Gate is becoming more expensive

Last generation climate activists had sprayed paint on all the pillars. Originally it was said that the cleaning would cost 35,000 euros. Now it becomes clear: the effort is greater than expected.

Cleaning the Brandenburg Gate after a paint attack by climate activists will take significantly longer and cost more than initially thought. This was announced by Berliner Immobilienmanagement (BIM). “Because of its water content, the color mixture penetrated deeper into the sandstone than initially assumed,” said a BIM spokeswoman.

The company assumes that the work will take several weeks and that the gate will have to be scaffolded. It is not yet possible to name the specific costs. However, a six-figure sum can be assumed. Originally around 35,000 euros were mentioned.

The BIM announced that it would like to assert civil claims for damages against those responsible, regardless of the criminal proceedings. Members of the climate protection group Last Generation sprayed all the pillars of the Brandenburg Gate with orange paint on September 17th. The police arrested 14 climate activists at the time. According to her own statements, she is investigating property damage that is harmful to the community.

According to the BIM, it still needs to be clarified how deep the paint has penetrated into the sandstone. This depends on the form in which further cleaning work is carried out. To this end, various procedures have been tested on sample areas over the past few days in consultation with the State Monuments Office. A combination of several means is likely. The use of laser technology is also still being examined, said the spokeswoman.
