important today: Black Friday under fire: Why too much consumption harms us

Black Friday beckons with huge discounts. The whole consumption doesn’t even make for more satisfaction – on the contrary. And besides, we destroy our livelihood, says the social psychologist Prof. Harald Welzer.

Renunciation – the pure concept of renunciation has a negative connotation for many people. Renunciation sounds like compromising, going backwards, enduring loss. A large part of our society is in abundance, which is not automatically good for us – which in the long term will primarily cost us our livelihood. “We live in a consumer culture that manages to get people to do things that they would probably not do on closer inspection,” says the renowned sociologist Prof. Harald Welzer. “For example, it is a total mystery to me why people buy cars that do not bring them into parking garages.”

Fighting ecological problems with more growth?

The same mistake is likely to be made by the Ampel coalition, whose coalition agreement is expected to be adopted in the course of the week. In doing so, Prof. Welzer criticizes: “The coalition agreement of our new, future, super-hyper-government will begin with the words: We will ensure more growth. And then, paradoxically, they want to fight our ecological problems with more growth.” That is not only absurd, but even a denial of reality, so Welzer.

Everyone who can should vaccinate

Meanwhile in Germany the discussion about the booster vaccination is in full swing. Biontech, Moderna, whatever – what we need are fast vaccination options, for everyone. This is what the SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach calls for. The Infection Protection Act allows vaccination centers to be reopened, pharmacies or veterinarians to be brought in. “We have to get everyone who can and wants to vaccinate, unbureaucratic,” said Lauterbach.
