NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg visited Ukraine for the second time since the Russian war of aggression began in February 2022. The Norwegian met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kiev on Thursday. The meeting was initially kept secret for security reasons. Stoltenberg visited Ukraine for the first time after the start of the war on April 20 of this year.
Zelenskyj thanked Stoltenberg on Telegram for the “meaningful” conversation. “Today this is already a conversation between de facto allies – and it is only a matter of time before Ukraine becomes a de jure member of the alliance,” he further wrote.
At a joint press conference, Zelensky announced a new joint document that would set out practical steps for Ukraine to achieve NATO standards. Zelensky also expressed gratitude for the continued support of NATO partners, but at the same time emphasized the need for further help in the areas of cyber security and air defense.
For 19 months, Ukraine has been fending off a Russian war of aggression with massive Western help. The attacked country is also seeking NATO membership, which Kiev has so far been denied.
