The renewed reinstatement of the Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok in his government office does not calm the crisis state: The organizers of the protests of the past weeks are calling for further demonstrations.
After the agreement for a new interim government signed by Hamdok and the military ruler General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan on Sunday, demonstrators took to the streets until Monday night. The police used tear gas. Another protest was announced for the afternoon. Opponents of the new interim government accused Hamdok of treason.
“We will get our country back on track,” Hamdok said on Sunday about the agreement. You clear the way to democracy again. Thereafter, Hamdok is allowed to form a cabinet with civilian representatives. However, as the leader of the Sovereign Council, Al-Burhan will head the new interim government together with Hamdok. In the past few weeks there have been repeated protests by thousands of Sudanese who are calling for more democracy and a civilian government in the country with 44 million inhabitants. A few days ago at rallies for democracy at least 15 civilians were killed by the use of live ammunition. The international community also called for the restoration of constitutional order.
The international community has responded positively to the Khartoum agreement. It was “encouraging”, it was said in a joint statement by the EU, Canada and Switzerland. At the same time, the release of all political prisoners was demanded.
