The prominent US Senator Dianne Feinstein is dead. The Democrat died on Thursday evening (local time) in Washington at the age of 90, her office announced on Friday. Feinstein was a “force of nature” who had an incredible influence on the country and her home state of California. Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer praised Feinstein’s persistence, strength and integrity.
The Democrat from the state of California was the oldest senator in the congressional chamber. In February she announced that she would not run again in next year’s election for health reasons. Recently, given her health condition, she was confronted with calls for her resignation, including from her party colleagues.
Feinstein held numerous high-ranking positions in her long political career and, as a woman, was often a pioneer. From 1978 to 1988 she was the first female mayor of San Francisco, and in 1992 she was the first woman elected to the Senate for the influential state of California. She was also the first woman to chair the Intelligence Committee.
