Whether electricity, water or heating – the Russian army will probably attack the supply in Ukraine again next winter, says security expert Christian Mölling. Cities in particular would now be better equipped.
According to security expert Christian Mölling, the Russian armed forces will again attack the Ukrainians’ supply of electricity, water and heating in the coming winter. Mölling said on Friday star– “Ukraine – the situation” such attacks will happen again “because it is believed that it is part of an effective attrition strategy”.
Terror against the civilian population is part of Russian strategy. Among other things, this could mean that Ukrainians have to devote resources and attention to protecting people. “The Russian army has begun to supply itself with additional drones,” emphasized the research director of the German Society for Foreign Policy.
Ukraine’s anti-aircraft defense is better than last winter
However, compared to last winter, air defense has improved significantly, especially in the metropolitan areas of Ukraine. He called for additional systems to be delivered to Ukraine now to expand protection. “Ukraine needs everything it can get this winter,” he said. “It’s also about very old-fashioned anti-aircraft guns.” These could certainly be procured and delivered before winter and used against simple drones that fly slowly and low and are therefore easy to hit. Ukraine also needs additional generators and fuel to operate them.
Mölling did not assume that aerial terror would break the Ukrainian population’s will to resist. “I think it’s unlikely that you can get the population to say: OK, we’re giving up now,” he emphasized. However, it is to be expected that supply problems would lead to new refugee movements – especially within the country. He pointed out that people are keen to stay in the region.
How large the refugee movements would be and whether they would result in many people arriving in Germany again depends primarily on how hard the winter will be. “If it gets too bad, people will certainly start traveling out of Ukraine again,” he said.
