Migration: Police union: fight against smugglers right

Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic want to take stronger action against irregular migration at their borders. The police union says why it thinks this is the right path.

The police union sees Germany’s joint action with Poland and the Czech Republic as the right step towards a European fight against smugglers.

“We police officers hope that the joint European approach will bring tangible success for the German border regions and relieve our tense work situation,” said GdP federal leader Jochen Kopelke to the German Press Agency. A European challenge needs a European solution. “That’s why joint action in the fight against illegal smuggling with our neighbors Poland and the Czech Republic is the right approach. Europol once again has a particular importance here.”

Demand: More resources and staff

Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) had agreed to joint patrols on their territory with Poland and the Czech Republic. Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic want to take stronger action against irregular migration at their borders with a task force. According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, the plan is to take effective action against smugglers and to detect and prevent unauthorized entries.

Faeser had previously announced increased flexible controls at the borders with the Czech Republic and Poland. She currently does not want to apply to the EU Commission for fixed border controls that already exist on the border between Bavaria and Austria. The Union also demands this for the borders with Poland and the Czech Republic.

The police union supports Faeser’s joint approach with Poland and the Czech Republic, but also calls for more resources and personnel. “In order to guarantee sustainable success, it is particularly urgent to strengthen the civilian police force and criminal investigations financially and in terms of personnel,” said the GdP federal chairman. The European police authority Europol and the European Border and Coast Guard Agency, Frontex, need to be strengthened in their operational work.
