In France’s capital, the temperature is rising even faster than elsewhere. Now the mayor of Paris has decreed what many metropolises need: the eco-transition as heat protection.
On this Sunday in September it is quiet on the Champs-Élysées. “You can hear the birds chirping,” wonders Iris, a Scottish woman from Edinburgh. “That’s what it must have been like in lockdown,” says Martin, her husband. The two quickly take a selfie in the middle of the street, with the Triumphal Arch in the background, surrounded by walkers, some of whom have picnic blankets with them. They wanted to make the most of the day, says Martin: “Being able to experience Paris like this – that’s a gift!”
