No other federal state has such high numbers of corona infections as Saxony. The trend reversal should bring new restrictions on public life since Monday. But is that enough?
The corona incidence in Saxony is approaching the 1000 mark in large steps, and a good tenth school is now completely or at least partially closed due to the high level of infections.
In order to get the dramatically increasing number of cases under control, the Free State has been in the so-called “breakwater” since Monday. Public life is particularly restricted for the unvaccinated. But it could be too late to avert worse things, says at least the President of the State Medical Association, Erik Bodendieck. The Free State must prepare for a triage.
Bodendieck told the broadcaster NDR Info that there were only a few beds available in the intensive care units in the Free State. If nothing changes, a selection must be made of who will be treated and who will not. “We have to triage, and I’ll discuss that again with my colleagues in the clinics this week.” Triage means that medical professionals must decide who to help first due to scarce resources.
Help is needed
Preventive triage, i.e. keeping beds free, is not legally possible. “For unvaccinated patients in a Covid situation, this is usually not the case that they can survive a Covid situation,” said Bodendieck. Saxony is in any case dependent on the help of other federal states.
The number of corona infections in the Free State has skyrocketed again. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported a value of 960.7 on Monday; on Sunday the number of new infections reported per 100,000 inhabitants within a week was still 862.1.
Schools cannot ignore this either. A good eleven percent of public schools in Saxony are currently completely or partially closed due to the high number of corona cases, as can be seen from a list by the Ministry of Culture.
New corona rules
The so-called “breakwater” is supposed to bring about a turning point. All cultural and leisure facilities, bars, clubs and discos have been closed since Monday. The Christmas markets, major events and other festivals have also been canceled. Tourists are no longer allowed to stay overnight and the restaurant is only allowed to open between 6 a.m. and 8 p.m. with the 2G rule – access only for those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered.
In addition, additional exit restrictions apply to unvaccinated people in Corona hotspots. Seven districts in Saxony are currently exceeding the threshold of 1000 – the Erzgebirgskreis is one of them. According to the district office, exit restrictions for unvaccinated people will come into force there on Tuesday.
