The German-born right-wing Pinochet sympathizer José Antonio Kast received a good 28 percent of the vote and had to face a runoff election on December 19 against the young left-wing politician Gabriel Boric.
The 55-year-old Kast from the Republican Party wants to cut taxes, limit immigration and crack down on criminals. As a strict Catholic, he rejects gay marriage and abortions and sympathizes with the far-right Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.
The only 35-year-old candidate Boric from the left-wing electoral alliance “Apruebo Dignidad” (“I agree to the dignity”), on the other hand, campaigns for the expansion of the welfare state, for climate protection and women’s rights.
But one thing has already been decided: the traditional party structure in Chile is now obsolete.
