Medicine: New federal institute should strengthen health prevention

According to Minister Lauterbach, Germany spends a particularly large amount on health, but its life expectancy is only average. This should change through an “Institute for Prevention and Education”.

According to Health Minister Karl Lauterbach’s plans, a new federal authority will be responsible for providing increased information and prevention on issues such as cancer, dementia and cardiovascular diseases. A “Federal Institute for Prevention and Education in Medicine” is to be set up by 2025, as the SPD politician announced in Berlin. The current Federal Center for Health Education should also be incorporated into this.

Lauterbach said Germany spends more on health than any other EU country, but is only average when it comes to life expectancy. The system is too focused on treating existing illnesses and there is no effective prevention. The new institute should improve this.

Lars Schaade has been appointed as the new president of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), as the ministry announced. Schaade had already temporarily led the RKI after Lothar Wieler left. As part of the planned reorganization of authorities, the institute is to focus even more clearly on and specialize in the defense against infectious diseases, while the focus of the new federal institute is to be on preventing non-communicable diseases.
