In fire letters, districts and municipalities complain that their options for accepting more refugees have been exhausted. How is the situation? The star spoke to Klaus Ritgen, who is responsible for the topic of distributive justice at the German District Council.
Mr. Ritgen, is it true that German cities and communities would have enough space for refugees if they were only distributed better?
It is true that there is no nationwide resource register. The municipalities are not obliged to report the number of free places, which is why there are no figures for this.
So much is being registered in Germany, including the arrival of refugees. Why is there no file on available accommodation?
Because the numbers change in a very short time. Nobody knows today how many people will arrive where and when tomorrow. If forty people stand in front of the town hall, the municipality has to offer them decent accommodation within a few hours.
