Rocket attack: Ukraine reports 49 dead in Russian attack near Kharkiv

In Ukraine, civilians repeatedly fall victim to Russian shelling. According to official Ukrainian information, there has now been a particularly devastating attack in the Kharkiv region.

According to authorities, at least 49 people were killed in a Russian attack in the eastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv. Not far from the city of Kupyansk, a café and a grocery store were hit in the town of Hrosa on Thursday, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office said. A six-year-old girl was also among the dead. Seven other people were injured. The authority also released photos and a video showing piles of rubble and people lying motionless on the ground.

According to military governor Oleh Synehubow, the shelling occurred around 1:15 p.m. local time (12:15 p.m. CEST). Rescue work was underway, he wrote on Telegram. According to media reports, Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said that so many people were there at the time of the attack because they were taking part in a memorial service for a deceased fellow citizen in the cafe. In the small town with around 330 residents, every family was affected by the devastating Russian shelling, he added.

Rocket on village

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj wrote on Telegram about a “demonstratively cruel Russian crime.” According to him, a rocket hit Hrosa. Russian terror must be stopped, he added. Anyone who helps Russia circumvent sanctions is complicit in the crime.

Zelensky arrived in Spain in the morning to attend the European Political Community summit in the city of Granada. There he is currently discussing further aid for Ukraine with the European heads of state, which in particular must include additional anti-aircraft weapons, he now wrote. He had previously called for European unity in the fight against Russian aggression.

Region liberated last fall

The now affected region around the city of Kupyansk was liberated from Russian occupation by Ukraine last fall during its offensive in the northeast of the country. At that time, the Ukrainian military also managed to cross the Oskil River and partially penetrate into the neighboring Luhansk region. In the meantime, however, the Russian armed forces have regained the initiative in the region. Bitter fighting has been raging in the east of the Kharkiv region for weeks.
