Elections: Luxembourg has elected a new parliament

The people of Luxembourg have decided who will rule their country for the next five years. There could be a change of power. The results of the vote counting are eagerly awaited.

Luxembourg elected a new parliament on Sunday. Around 284,000 eligible voters were called to vote for 60 seats in the Chamber of Deputies. The polling stations in the EU’s second-smallest country closed at 2 p.m. Liberal Prime Minister Xavier Bettel (50) cast his ballot in Luxembourg City this morning. It is uncertain whether the three-party coalition with the Social Democrats and the Greens, which he has led since 2013, will retain its majority.

According to the latest survey, there could be just enough for a new edition of the alliance, which was last represented in parliament with 31 seats. However, a change of government is also possible with the participation of the Christian Social People’s Party (CSV), which is entering the race with the top candidate Luc Frieden (60). According to surveys, it is the strongest party. The CSV is currently represented with 21 seats. The right-wing ADR has four MPs, the left-wing party and the Pirates have two each.

In Luxembourg, with a population of over 660,000, voting is compulsory: turnout was around 90 percent in 2018. Because of the complicated election process, in which votes can also be awarded to individual candidates from different parties, the results are not expected until the evening.
