After the worst attacks by the radical Islamic Palestinian group Hamas in decades, with hundreds of deaths, Israel has launched massive shelling of the Gaza Strip. On Sunday night, Israeli air strikes hit apartment blocks, tunnels, a mosque and the houses of Hamas officials in the Gaza Strip. More than 300 people, including 20 children, were killed by the Israeli counterattacks. The Israeli military said hundreds of attackers were killed and dozens more captured. Tens of thousands of soldiers are now stationed in the area around the Gaza Strip, where 2.3 million Palestinians live. Israel had already cut off the power supply to the coastal area on Saturday. The death toll in Israel after the surprise Hamas attack on Saturday continued to rise. According to reports from Israeli TV channels, the number was recently between 500 and 600. The number of injured on both sides is in the thousands. Since Israel was briefly attacked on Sunday by the Islamist militia Hezbollah from Lebanon, fears grew of a conflagration in the region, which a number of countries have already warned about. In southern Israel, the army was still fighting against Hamas extremists in some places on Sunday. It fired thousands of rockets and hundreds of fighters penetrated through the massive border fortifications from the Gaza Strip into Israel. They killed countless civilians in towns near the border and apparently kidnapped several dozen people into the Gaza Strip. There are also numerous foreigners among the victims. Israel’s military and secret service are being criticized for failing to prevent the bloodiest attack in decades. The attack apparently caught Israel completely unprepared. More
