After the Islamist Hamas attack on Israel, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier called for particular vigilance in Germany too. “We must protect Jewish life in our country and stand strong and resolutely against any form of anti-Semitism and hatred of Israel,” he said before the start of an award ceremony in Berlin’s Bellevue Palace. “We cannot tolerate attempts to celebrate the brutal attacks on Israel on the streets.”
According to the previously published speech manuscript, the Federal President emphasized: “Anyone who applauds this terror is not only degrading the victims, he is also trampling on human dignity and our German constitution. Such behavior appalls me, it disgusts me.”
Steinmeier promised Israel Germany’s solidarity. “In this difficult time, Germany stands firmly by Israel’s side. The Israeli people and the Jews in Germany can rely on that.” The brutal terrorist attack shocked us all. Hamas has invaded Israel with murder and arson, killing and kidnapping innocent civilians – young, old, men and women. “It’s hard to put into words what the people of Israel are currently suffering,” said Steinmeier.
