In view of the increasing number of refugees, the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder is bringing a change to the Basic Law into play. You also have to talk about “the unthinkable”.
CSU leader Markus Söder has questioned the basic right to asylum in Germany in the refugee debate. A solution to the fundamental questions in asylum policy is needed, said Söder on Monday following a meeting of the CSU board in Munich. “In the end, we may have to discuss the unthinkable again, whether the only chance is perhaps a change in the law on the constitutional question of the fundamental right to asylum.”
It’s not just about cosmetic solutions, but about an actual reversal of the previous asylum policy, said Söder. He cited Austria and Denmark as role models. It’s about a changed structure, for example through more border protection, deportations, and a change in social incentive factors. Citizens’ money needs to be changed again.
Finally make Ayslpolitics a top priority
Söder renewed his call for Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) to make asylum policy a top priority. The prime ministers of the federal states have been asking for solutions for months. These are now overdue.
In the state elections in Hesse and Bavaria, refugee policy was the decisive question for many voters. The AfD made strong gains in both federal states. It is now the second-strongest faction in Hesse and the third-strongest faction in Bavaria, each in the role of opposition leader.
