Sahra Wagenknecht: Left-wing politicians apply to be excluded from the party

There has been speculation for months as to whether Sahra Wagenknecht will found her own party. Now several party colleagues still want to get rid of her. This is already the second attempt.

More than 50 Left members submitted an application for the exclusion of Sahra Wagenknecht to the party’s state arbitration commission in North Rhine-Westphalia on Monday. With her plans to possibly found a new party, Wagenknecht is “significantly violating the principles and rules of the party and is causing it serious damage,” according to the expulsion application available to the AFP news agency. The 58 applicants include members of state parliaments and state boards, local politicians and two left-wing members of the Bundestag.

Wagenknecht has so far ignored multiple requests from the party leaders to distance herself from plans to found a new party, as well as the party executive’s request to give back her mandate. “With our application we would like to protect our party from further damage,” it was also said in reference to the recent state elections in Hesse and Bavaria, in which the Left failed to pass the five percent hurdle on Sunday.

Not the first exclusion request against Sahra Wagenknecht

“A party that constantly receives opposition from its own prominent members of the Bundestag does not offer a clear profile, appears divided and unattractive,” explained the left-wing parliamentary group leader in the Bremen parliament, Sofia Leonidakis, and the Berlin state parliamentarian Elif Eralp on behalf of the signatories of the exclusion request. Wagenknecht’s actions were “incompatible with her role as a member of the Bundestag and a member of our party.” Therefore, the formal path for expulsion from the party is now being taken.

As early as 2021, some left-wing politicians had submitted an application for exclusion against Wagenknecht to the state arbitration commission in North Rhine-Westphalia. This was in connection with her book “The Self-Righteous”, in which she sharply criticized her party. At the time, the commission rejected the application as unjustified.
