307 in one week: the number of Covid deaths is rising again

For the first time, the number of new corona infections fell noticeably yesterday: it was 9513, after more than 13,000 on Monday. The last time there was a four-digit value was on November 8th. In Upper Austria there was again the highest value of all federal states with 2517.

But the curve for Covid sufferers who need hospital care continues to rise. A total of 3145 yesterday, 577 of them in intensive care units. And: more people are dying with the virus again. Yesterday 72 deaths were recorded within 24 hours, a similar number last occurred on January 19 (77). 307 people have died of Covid in the last seven days.

The incidence, which fell yesterday, should not be taken as an indication of the lockdown that is already in effect: First, the total number of tests has decreased somewhat. And secondly, the high numbers of infections of the past few days will only determine what is happening in the hospitals for the next two or three weeks. Updated figures from the Covid forecasting consortium will be published today, those of the previous week were gloomy and saw in all federal states the risk that the intensive care units would reach a critical utilization limit by the beginning of December.

The prognosis from the previous week comes with a delay: An average of 575 intensive care patients across Austria was expected for Monday and an increase to 744 to 907 by December 1. As of yesterday, almost 150,000 actively sick and almost as many were in quarantine or Treatment registered persons.

The Lower Austrian Medical Association Vice-President, Gerrit Loibl, spoke up yesterday with an alternative proposal to the mandatory vaccination announced by the government: He spoke out in favor of a “pandemic tax” that unvaccinated people should pay. Based on the tobacco tax, he proposed a monthly amount of 90 to 100 euros. Medical law expert Karl Stger thought little of it: Those who accept the fine instead of the vaccination will probably also accept this tax.

“No end for the unvaccinated”

Virologist Monika Redlberger-Fritz, on the other hand, specified that there would have to be exceptions to the mandatory vaccination. She said that people who are allergic to any component of the vaccine or “the few who have developed a thrombosis after the first vaccination” would not be subject to compulsory vaccination. Redlberger-Fritz is a member of the National Vaccination Committee.

Federal Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg made it clear that there is “no end date for unvaccinated people” with the current lockdown. “
