After the CDU was defeated in the federal elections, the veterinarian and local politician Sabine Buder decided to run for the chairmanship of her party. In advance, she was advised to secure majorities in advance. But she wanted to face the direct choice: “That is exactly the kind of politics that I don’t want to do: fiddling around until it fits,” said Buder.
Sabine Buder: “It wasn’t the old, white men”
Her failure has nothing to do with her gender, explains Buder. Rather, it was their inexperience – and the petrified structures within the CDU. She received little support, especially from female party colleagues: “It was not the old, white men who spoke out against my nomination. They were actually women who were not ready to go this way with me.”
