A man attacked and injured an Israeli with a knife in the Chinese capital Beijing. The crime took place on Friday afternoon in Chaoyang district in front of a supermarket, Beijing police said on Friday evening. The victim was a 50-year-old family member of a member of the Israeli embassy in China. The embassy is also in this area.
The police later arrested a “foreigner” suspect, it was said. The police did not provide any further information about the 53-year-old’s origins or the background to the attack. It just said that the man worked in the small goods store.
The Israeli Foreign Ministry had previously said that an employee of the Israeli embassy in Beijing had been attacked. He is being treated in hospital. His condition is stable. Videos circulating on the Internet were supposed to show the crime. One showed a person in light-colored clothing wrestling with a man on the ground and then injuring him with an object. Another video was supposed to show the victim, covered in blood, sitting on the side of the road surrounded by passers-by.
The Foreign Ministry in Beijing did not respond to a query about the incident as of Friday evening. The Beijing police say they are investigating the case.
