Elad Mintzer, 37, has lived in Berlin for three years. He just wanted to build his own start-up. Then came the war. Here he explains why he went to Israel to join the army.
Recorded by Jonas Fedders
“I’ve been in Israel since Thursday morning. I’m doing well so far, I just feel a little sick. I think my body is still processing the whole situation. It’ll definitely get better in the next few days.
I phoned my parents in Israel from Berlin. I wanted to hear how they were doing. At some point my mother said: ‘Elad, they have called up a lot of reservists. Are you sure you’re not one of them?’
I replied: ‘I don’t know, I’ll check my Israeli cell phone, maybe I got a text message.’ And then I said, ‘Oh, Mom, yes, I got drafted.’ We both had to laugh at that.
