The discussions are likely to focus on the consequences of the defeat of the traffic light parties in the state elections in Bavaria and Hesse. Also on the agenda: the situation in Israel and migration policy.
The leaders of the traffic light coalition made up of the SPD, Greens and FDP have begun discussions in the Chancellery about the current political situation. According to coalition circles, it was also about the situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories. Before the meeting it was learned that it would also be about drawing conclusions from the results of the state elections in Bavaria and Hesse. All three parties had lost support from voters. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD), leaders of parties and parliamentary groups and several ministers take part in the meeting.
“Within the government coalition we have had an absurd, ongoing argument about political decisions,” Scholz told “Spiegel” about the state of his coalition. “Citizens often didn’t understand that any more than I did. And that has to end now.” It currently looks as if “everyone in the government parties has now understood this”.
Government spokesman Steffen Hebestreit spoke of a routine meeting that takes place regularly. The coalition committee is a matter for the governing parties.
It was expected that the topic of migration would also be discussed. The federal government recently presented a reform package that aims to limit irregular immigration to Germany and make deportations easier. Scholz had called on the federal states and the Union to cooperate. The countries themselves also presented a comprehensive paper. A solution should now be found by the Prime Minister’s Conference on November 6th, which will receive a broad majority in the Bundestag and be supported by the states.
Scholz told “Spiegel”: “We have to deport more and faster.” This also met with some criticism in the SPD parliamentary group. SPD MPs Rasha Nasr and Hakan Demir published a statement on Friday in which they emphasized that deportations are “only a small part of the solution” in times of high inflation and companies calling for help. They criticized: “Migration is one of many issues that we have to deal with – some people act as if this is the only issue left, when in fact we have so much to do.”
