Vaccination recommended for ages five and up – 258,000 doses of children’s vaccine ordered

After the European Medicines Agency (EMA) gave the green light on Thursday for the use of BioNTech / Pfizer’s corona vaccine in children aged five to eleven, vaccination is also recommended by the National Vaccination Board (NIG). That said the head of the NIG, Ursula Wiedermann-Schmidt, at a press conference in Vienna. “Child vaccination is safe,” said Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens).

258,000 doses of the company’s own vaccine with the new formulation are to be delivered to Austria by the end of the year. “That is the maximum amount we got,” said Mückstein. Around 600,000 children between the ages of five and eleven live in this country. Until they have their own vaccine, the children should continue to be immunized with a third of the adult dose.

Corona vaccination is compulsory in Austria from February. Even after multiple inquiries, Mückstein did not answer whether it would also apply to children. That has to be discussed broadly with experts.
