Vaccination: Famann offers countries support from school doctors

In a letter to the provincial governors, he referred to the legal possibility of using school doctors outside of their work in schools for advice and vaccination.

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) gave the green light on Thursday for the use of the corona vaccine from BioNTech and Pfizer in children between the ages of five and eleven. This age group can lege artis receive a vaccination against Covid-19 – previously this was only possible via an off-label application.

According to Famann’s letter, the federal states have already done important preparatory work and in some cases have already started vaccinations for the younger age group. According to the School Education Act, school doctors are responsible for carrying out vaccinations and giving advice on vaccinations, as well as combating infectious diseases. In addition, on the basis of the School Doctors Ordinance, the state governors can also commission school doctors to carry out vaccinations as part of the joint free vaccination program of the federal government.

The education directorates would help with the execution of contracts and agreements with doctors, said the minister. If it is necessary to go beyond the existing employment and contractual relationships, the costs could be reimbursed by the Ministry of Health.
