Faster deportations, tougher action against smugglers: The federal cabinet of the traffic light coalition confirmed a bill by Nancy Faeser. The draft now has to go through the Bundestag and Bundesrat.
The federal government has agreed on stricter regulations for the deportation of rejected asylum seekers. According to government circles, the cabinet approved the corresponding draft law from Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) to improve returns on Wednesday. In particular, it provides for extended detention options for those subject to deportation and more rights for the police during searches.
The aim is also to speed up the deportation of smugglers. Foreign members of criminal organizations should also be able to be deported in the future regardless of an individual conviction.
Traffic light reacts to increased number of asylum seekers
With the law, the federal government is reacting to the significantly increased number of asylum seekers in Germany and the dwindling accommodation options for refugees in many municipalities. Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) announced at the weekend that people without any prospects of staying would now have to be deported “finally on a large scale”.
Concerns about the deportation package come from the ranks of the Greens in the traffic light coalition. They sometimes criticize restrictions on fundamental rights that are too far-reaching.
