Violence against women: UN: One woman in the family killed every eleven minutes

Violence against women and girls is widespread. And the danger is mainly there where you would least expect it: at home.

According to a United Nations report, women and girls often face the greatest threat of violent death at home.

Of the estimated 81,000 female deaths in the previous year, 47,000 were killed by a partner or relative, according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in Vienna. Accordingly, every eleven minutes a woman or a girl was violently killed in private.

“UNDOC studies show that the situation has not improved in the past decade, not even in areas where acts of violence have declined overall,” said UNODC chief Ghada Waly on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Although eighty percent of all homicides worldwide are male, in cases within relationships or families, the proportion of female victims is 60 percent.

In Africa, women and girls are at the highest risk of deadly violence in close proximity, followed by Oceania and the Americas. According to the information, this risk is lowest in Europe and Asia. The UNODC carried out its global analysis using data from 95 countries.

According to the UN authority, the impact of corona lockdowns cannot yet be clearly assessed. Although the number of women and girls killed in Western countries rose slightly last year, the changes were regionally different and remained within the framework of the fluctuations of recent years, it said.
