Turkish President: Erdogan calls Hamas a freedom fighter

Hamas is a terrorist organization for the USA, Europe and Israel – but not for Turkey. Erdogan now says Hamas is fighting to protect its citizens. And at the same time calls for a ceasefire.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has described the Islamist Hamas, which rules in the Gaza Strip, as freedom fighters.

“Hamas is not a terrorist organization, but a liberation and mujahideen group that fights to protect its country and its citizens,” Erdogan told supporters of his Islamic conservative AKP party in Ankara. Mujahideen usually refers to fighters from Islamist groups.

Erdogan condemns Israel’s “atrocities” in the Gaza Strip

Erdogan went on to say that they have no problem with the State of Israel, but they condemn Israel’s “atrocities” in the Gaza Strip. Turkey does not condone actions that target civilians, “including Israeli civilians.” Erdogan called for a ceasefire.

Habeck distances himself from Erdogan’s statements

Before his trip to Turkey, Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) clearly distanced himself from the Turkish President’s statements about Hamas. He “doesn’t agree with that at all,” Habeck told journalists before his departure from Berlin.

Habeck continued: “For me, Hamas is not a liberation organization, it does not fight for the freedom of the Palestinian population, on the contrary, it slaughtered Israelis and has now taken responsibility for this terrible suffering happening in the Gaza Strip.”

Habeck is holding political talks in the Turkish capital Ankara this Thursday.

Hamas is not a terrorist organization for Türkiye

The Islamist Hamas, which rules in the Gaza Strip, carried out a massacre of civilians in Israel on October 7th and abducted more than 200 people, including Germans. In response, Israel imposed a blockade on water, electricity and fuel supplies to the Gaza Strip and launched air strikes.

Hamas is a terrorist organization for the USA, Europe and Israel, but not for Turkey. Ankara maintains contacts with Hamas and says it is trying to free hostages.
