War against Ukraine: Report: Russia lacks ammunition for air strikes

For some time now, Russia has stopped using long-range aviation forces against Ukraine. Experts suspect that this is due to a dwindling population – but warn of renewed attacks in the winter.

According to British estimates, the Russian long-distance aviation forces have not carried out air strikes against Ukraine for more than a month due to a lack of ammunition. The British Ministry of Defense said it was one of the longest phases without such attacks since the war began in February 2022.

“Russia almost certainly had to reduce the frequency of its attacks to replenish its dwindling inventory of AS-23a Kodiak cruise missiles,” it said. Even though Russia has other options for air strikes, the long-distance aviation forces (Russian: Dalnjaja awiazija) have so far been “the primary method for carrying out long-range attacks.”

The British ministry warned that Russia would likely use all of its long-distance aircraft’s ammunition stocks to attack Ukraine’s energy infrastructure in the winter. Iranian “kamikaze drones” will most likely continue to be used for this purpose.

The British Ministry of Defense has been publishing daily information on the course of the war since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine. Moscow accuses London of disinformation.
