Fridays for Future: This is how Luisa Neubauer and Co. react to Israel postings

The position on the Middle East conflict seems to divide the climate movement Fridays for Future. This is not the first time that the German group has distanced itself from the international account these days.

Fridays for Future (FFF) Germany is at loggerheads with the international social media account of the climate protection movement. The reason: different positions on the Middle East conflict.

In view of the Gaza war, the German group around Luisa Neubauer and Co. clearly and repeatedly distanced itself from anti-Israel statements on the international FFF account. “No, the international account – as previously emphasized – does not speak for us. No, the post is not coordinated with us. No, we do not agree with the content.” The group wrote this on Thursday on various online platforms.

Some commentators also called for consequences and that the German group should secede. But so far that hasn’t happened.

Fridays for Future shared anti-Semitic slogans

Just last week, FFF founder Greta Thunberg called for a strike for more solidarity with the Palestinians. The posting also caused outrage because the 1,400 deaths on the Israeli side after the major Hamas attack were not even mentioned.

Now the international FFF account on social networks made serious accusations against the Israeli state and “Western media”. They were “brainwashing” and would not tell the “whole story”. Among other things, the media hides the fact that Hamas and its attacks on Israel are rooted in “75 years of oppression and ethnic oppression[n] Purges of the Palestinians”. It is not a conflict, but a genocide.

“We have made our position clear,” the German section wrote on Thursday, referring to previous posts on its X account in which it had expressed solidarity with Israel. “Since yesterday we have been experiencing unprecedented terror by Hamas against Israel. We are horrified and mourn the victims. Go to the solidarity rallies, show your flag,” it said on October 8th. This posting was also shared by prominent faces of the group.

Furthermore, well-known representatives in Germany hardly commented individually. Luisa Neubauer and Carla Reemtsma, for example, primarily shared the post from the German FFF group.

In addition, not only the German section, but also the Austrian section distances itself. Fridays for Future Austria writes that the international account does not speak for the entire movement or for FFF in Austria.

Movement in Germany is distancing itself

It is not the first time that German activists have distanced themselves from the umbrella organization’s accounts. In January, the international Fridays for Future account spoke of “neocolonialism and apartheid” in relation to Israel in a posting, and the climate movement stood united on the side of the Palestinian resistance. The posting ends with “Yallah Intifada”.

The German group then spoke of “anti-Semitic content” and made it clear: “The account does not speak for FFF Germany.” Research by the “Jüdische Allgemeine” then showed that the postings on the international account are only determined by a small group of people who coordinate with each other.

On October 7, terrorists from the Gaza Strip-ruling terrorist group Hamas massacred civilians in Israel and abducted more than 200 people. Since then, Israel’s army has been bombing targets in the sealed-off coastal area and preparing a ground offensive. As a result, there are repeated demonstrations by Palestinians and supporters on German streets, in which some participants cheered the Islamist Hamas.
