In a widely watched video, Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck spoke out against anti-Semitism and emphasized Germany’s solidarity with Israel. Many praise the Green politician for his clear speech – even politicians from whom one would not have expected it.
Robert Habeck’s speech about the situation in the Middle East and the public debate about it, posted on social media by the Federal Ministry of Economics, triggered a great response. In just under ten minutes, the Vice Chancellor seems to have hit a note that resonates with many people. At least that’s what the reactions to the video that was published on Wednesday evening show.
“Anti-Semitism should not be tolerated in any form,” says Habeck, among other things, and emphasizes: “in none.” In doing so, the Green politician not only criticizes the pro-Palestinian demonstrations on German streets, some of which are banned, but also left-wing anti-Semitism. It was therefore logical that the German division of Fridays for Future distanced itself from the international group’s anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian statements. Islamist anti-Semitism should not obscure the fact that anti-Semitism has become entrenched in Germany – even if right-wing extremists are now holding back for tactical reasons in order to be able to incite hatred against Muslims, says Habeck.

Habeck also warns of consequences if someone commits crimes, such as burning an Israeli flag: “Anyone who is German will have to answer for it in court, and anyone who is not German will also risk their residence status. Anyone who does not yet have a residence permit will provide one reason to be deported.”
Habeck received support for these clear words from an unexpected source, at least from a party political perspective: from the ranks of the CDU. Both the former candidate for chancellor Armin Laschet and the CDU vice-chairwoman Karin Prien speak at It is a “strong, necessary appearance,” writes Prien.
Some commentators even put the Vice Chancellor on the same level as Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and criticize that these words should have come from him.
Habeck also condemns the terrorist organization Hamas and emphasizes that Germany must stand by Israel out of historical responsibility.
