According to the Hamas-controlled Ministry of Health, hospitals in the Gaza Strip can barely function. A spokesman said 16 of a total of 35 hospitals could no longer treat patients due to a lack of fuel. They need fuel for their generators to produce electricity. Other clinics could only provide very limited care. Many Palestinian internally displaced people have also sought refuge in the hospitals because of the fierce Israeli attacks. According to the UN, there are now 1.4 displaced people in the small coastal strip with more than 2.2 million inhabitants. Fuel is “desperately needed for the deployment of life-saving equipment”says the UN emergency relief agency OCHA.
Israel does not want to allow the import of fuel into the Gaza Strip because it fears abuse by Hamas, which rules there. Israel also accuses Hamas of taking fuel from hospitals for war purposes.
