The 59-year-old felt honored, the Navy said in a statement. “I look forward to leading the most powerful Navy in the world.” Franchetti is the first woman in this role and the first female member of the U.S. military’s General Staff. General David Allvin was also confirmed as chief of staff of the US Air Force with a majority of 95 votes, the Air Force announced.
President Joe Biden nominated Franchetti for the role in July. In the USA, however, such personal details still have to be approved by the Senate. However, one of the senators in the chamber of Congress, Republican Tommy Tuberville, has been blocking hundreds of military nominations for some time now – in protest against a Defense Department rule that allows military members to receive certain support in the event of an abortion. In the US Senate, many formal procedures require unanimity. Therefore, even a single member of the Senate can stop certain processes.
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said he was pleased with the Senate’s decision. However, there are still more than 370 “excellently qualified” executives whose nominations have unnecessarily stalled. “As we face a variety of pressing challenges, the strongest fighting force in history must be at full strength,” Austin said.
