Great Britain is trying to deal with the spread of the new Coronavirus variant Omikron with draconian measures. As the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Saturday afternoon in London, a compulsory quarantine will be imposed on all travelers. They are required to take a PCR test the second day after entering the country and isolate themselves in quarantine until a negative result is obtained, Johnson said.
The British prime minister commented after the omicron variant had been detected in two travelers returning from southern Africa. The Spanish government had tightened the entry requirements for the British. From Wednesday only fully immunized people from Great Britain will be allowed to enter Spain, a negative PCR test will no longer be sufficient.
The new British entry requirements apply regardless of vaccination status and should be checked after three weeks. Until now, people who were fully vaccinated from most countries only had to do a rapid test after entering the country, but no longer had to go into quarantine. Only a few countries, meanwhile also many African ones, are on the so-called red list. Those returning from these countries would have to go to a ten-day hotel quarantine at their own expense.
According to several other countries, two cases of the omicron variant were also found in Great Britain on Saturday. The people concerned and their households are in quarantine, and tests will be intensified in the areas, said British Health Minister Sajid Javid.
Despite the worsening situation, the UK government is not yet implementing its emergency plan. This provides for vaccination certificates at major events and the recommendation to work from home. Only the mask requirement indoors – for example in public transport and shops – is to be tightened again. Apart from that, in Great Britain, despite strict entry rules, it remains the case that hardly any corona measures still apply domestically.
