US Secretary of State Blinken praised the quick identification of the Omikron variant and the transparent handling of its existence. South Africa is a role model.
The US government has praised South Africa’s actions in connection with the Omikron variant as exemplary.
In a telephone conversation with his South African counterpart Naledi Pandor, Foreign Minister Antony Blinken highlighted the scientists in South Africa for the quick identification of the Omicron variant, the US State Department announced on Saturday.
Blinken also praised the South African government for its transparency in passing on this information. This behavior should serve as a “model for the world”.
Worrying variant
The variant (B.1.1.529), which was first detected in southern Africa, was classified as “worrying” by the World Health Organization (WHO). The exact effects of the variant have not yet been determined. The South African Institute for Infectious Diseases NICD announced on Thursday that several cases of the new variant B.1.1.529 had been detected in South Africa.
The US government is also restricting entry from the states of southern Africa because of the new variant. As of Monday, entries from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique and Malawi are affected.
