Middle East war: GdP wants stricter action on pro-Palestinian demonstrations

The pro-Palestinian demonstrations at the weekend were largely peaceful. But the police union is calling for a more restrictive procedure.

After the pro-Palestinian demonstrations at the weekend, the police union (GdP) called for stricter action by the assembly authorities. “The assembly authorities must act even more restrictively with regard to the demonstrations registered as pro-Palestinian,” said GdP leader Jochen Kopelke to the editorial network Germany (RND). “In view of the enormous depletion of strength among us police officers, there should be no large parades, only stationary small rallies.” At the weekend there were large rallies in Essen and Berlin, among other places. In some cases, the police are investigating suspected sedition.

Kopelke said the turnout for these meetings is great. Above all, this must show how important it is for the police to protect Jewish life. “That’s why we need to join forces,” said Kopelke. For a few days now, “banned flags and symbols” have been seen at meetings. The police intervene and arrest criminals and confiscate flags.”

At the rally on Friday evening in Essen, among other things, banners calling for the establishment of a caliphate were shown. For example, Hizb ut-Tahrir, which has been banned from operating since 2003, is calling for this. In Berlin, thousands of people took to the streets at a pro-Palestinian rally on Saturday. According to their own information, the police there initiated 30 investigations, 16 on suspicion of incitement to hatred.

With a view to the federal-state consultations on Monday, Kopelke called on Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) to put internal security on the agenda. “When the heads of government discuss migration, they must also talk about the impact on the security of all people. Internal security must be a topic in the Prime Minister’s Conference.”
