The Office for the Protection of the Constitution also classifies the Saxony-Anhalt AfD regional association as proven right-wing extremist.
In Saxony-Anhalt, the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has classified the regional association of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) as a confirmed right-wing extremist effort. Authority head Jochen Hollmann announced this on Tuesday when asked. The authority evaluated numerous anti-Muslim, racist and anti-Semitic statements from officials and elected officials.
The Saxony-Anhalt AfD regional association has been classified as a suspected case by the state Office for the Protection of the Constitution since 2021. Since then, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution has collected further extensive information that is not compatible with human dignity, democracy and the rule of law, said Hollmann. After their evaluation, the regional association can and must be classified as definitely extremist. This now gives the Office for the Protection of the Constitution greater discretion in choosing the means of intelligence.
AfD Saxony-Anhalt’s second right-wing extremist regional association
The Saxony-Anhalt AfD is now the second state association to be classified in this way. In Thuringia, the state Office for the Protection of the Constitution had already classified the AfD and its controversial state party and parliamentary group leader Björn Höcke as definitely right-wing extremist in March 2021. The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has classified the AfD as a whole one level below, namely as a suspected right-wing extremist case.

From euro opponents to the case for the Office for the Protection of the Constitution: How the AfD has become more and more radical for years
In Saxony-Anhalt, the AfD is the strongest opposition party in the state parliament. The federal state with around 2.2 million inhabitants is governed by a coalition of the CDU, SPD and FDP.
Saxony-Anhalt’s head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Hollmann, explained the examinations in 2021 and 2022: “The state association not only continues to represent anti-constitutional positions that led to its classification as a suspected case, but has also become so radicalized since the corona pandemic that systematic observation is necessary justified using intelligence means.”
According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the AfD association wants to abolish democracy
The Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution found statements made by the AfD regional association that are incompatible with human dignity. It becomes clear that the AfD Saxony-Anhalt is calling for the exclusion of people because of their origin or religion. Leading representatives used a demonizing choice of words, for example by defaming migrants as “invaders”, “intruders” or “culturally foreign supply migrants”.
In addition, according to the findings of the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the AfD Saxony-Anhalt is striving to abolish parliamentary democracy in its current form. Representatives are striving to despise the democratic principle of the Federal Republic of Germany as well as its institutions and their representatives in order to fundamentally erode the population’s trust in them.
Hollmann, head of the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, continued: “We live in a well-armed democracy. The Office for the Protection of the Constitution acts as an early warning system. It warns the public about anti-constitutional efforts so that no one can say they didn’t know.”
