Hundreds of soldiers already relocated, warships and fighter aircraft in position – the USA is arming itself in the Middle East to protect its troops and support its allies.
In view of the Gaza war, the US government does not rule out sending further military support to the region.
The situation will continue to be monitored, National Security Council Communications Director John Kirby told US broadcaster CNN on Tuesday. If additional changes need to be made to the military’s strength, readiness or equipment, they will do so.
The US military had already deployed hundreds of soldiers to the Middle East last week. To deter regional actors, several warships and fighter aircraft were also sent to the eastern Mediterranean.
Pentagon: 40 attacks on US troops in Iraq and Syria
According to the Pentagon, pro-Iranian militias have attacked US military bases on at least 40 occasions since mid-October – including 22 times in Iraq and 18 times in Syria. The attacks with drones and missiles since October 17 have not been successful and there have been “no serious injuries” to US soldiers, said a spokeswoman for the US Department of Defense.
Because of the Gaza war, the security situation in the entire region is tense. The militias allied with Tehran see themselves on the side of the “Axis of Resistance”.
Regarding dozens of attacks on US forces stationed in Iraq and Syria by pro-Iranian militias, Kirby said: “We will of course do everything we have to do to protect our troops in Iraq and Syria.” The attacks are very worrying. So far, however, no actor has been seen to have made “demonstrable major muscle movements” to expand the conflict.
Kirby also made it clear once again that the US government does not support Israel’s renewed occupation of the Gaza Strip. US President Joe Biden still believes that this is “not good for Israel”. Kirby emphasized that the US would continue to stand by Israel and ensure that the country gets everything it needs in the fight against the Islamist Hamas.
