Dreyer: “It’s a disaster”

A state of emergency has been declared in many places. We hardly know the pictures from there in Germany: people stand on roofs to be evacuated. In the district of Trier-Saarburg, the municipality of Kordel is cut off from the outside world. The place with around 2000 inhabitants is currently not accessible, said a district spokesman. Prime Minister Malu Dreyer said in a special meeting of the Rhineland-Palatinate state government: “It is a disaster. There are dead, missing and many who are still in danger.”

In North Rhine-Westphalia, too, the situation was sometimes very tense. Several people died in their flooded cellars. The situation in Hagen is particularly tense. The Environment Agency speaks of a 120-year flood, where a state of emergency has been declared. North Rhine-Westphalia’s Prime Minister Armin Laschet visited the flood area yesterday to get an idea of ​​the situation.
