What will happen to the Gaza Strip after the war ends? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu still doesn’t seem to have a concrete plan. He first said on Monday that Israel would occupy the area, but shortly afterwards one of his ministers backtracked and said that the Israeli army would have a “security presence” there. Criticism is growing not only in the USA, where President Joe Biden is speaking out ever more vehemently against an occupation of the Gaza Strip – but also in Israel itself.
“Netanyahu is making a big mistake. He doesn’t understand that we finally need a political solution for the Gaza Strip,” says Israeli security expert Michael Milshtein. He headed the Palestinian Affairs Department of Israeli Military Intelligence until 2018 and is one of the best experts on the Palestinian territories in Israel. He currently heads the Forum for Palestine Studies at Tel Aviv University. He is difficult to reach – he also serves as an army reservist.
Mr. Milshtein, the Israeli army has moved into the center of Gaza City and controls the northern part of the Gaza Strip. Netanyahu has said Israel wants to assume responsibility for security in the Gaza Strip “for an indefinite period” to prevent further attacks. What exactly does that mean?
Netanyahu still has no plan. The lesson of the terrorist attack on October 7th is that things can no longer go on like this. What we are witnessing now is not just another repetition of the conflict that can, as usual, be patched up with a holey agreement or a flimsy agreement.
How then?
We don’t have many options. Two are terrible. The others seem almost impossible to realize right now.
