Erdogan’s visit: Almost every second German wants to be uninvited

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to pay a state visit to the capital next week. According to a survey, 45 percent of people in Germany are against the visit. The reason is his stance on the Islamist Hamas.

Almost every second German is against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s planned visit to Berlin. In a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov on behalf of the German Press Agency, 45 percent were in favor of Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) disinviting Erdogan because of his stance on the Islamist Hamas. However, 32 percent say he should still be received in the Chancellery. Almost a quarter of those surveyed did not provide any information.

Erdogan is expected to come to Germany next week at Scholz’s invitation for his first official visit in five years. The meeting with Scholz in the Chancellery could take place on Friday. But it hasn’t been officially announced yet.

After the terrorist attack on Israel that left more than 1,400 dead, Erdogan described the Islamist Hamas as a “liberation organization.” The USA and the EU, which are allies of Turkey in NATO, classify it as a terrorist organization.
