War refugees: Wagenknecht complains about cases of abuse of benefits among Ukrainians

CDU leader Merz had already raised the complaint about “social tourism” by Ukrainians about a year ago. Wagenknecht is now also complaining about cases of abuse of social benefits for Ukrainian refugees.

The former left-wing politician Sarah Wagenknecht complains about cases of abuse of social benefits for Ukrainian war refugees. “If Ukrainians go back to their homeland, actually live there, and only come here to get the benefit, then there are big question marks,” Wagenknecht told the RTL/Ntv broadcasters.

“I know of specific cases. In my hometown, entire houses were rented for Ukrainian refugees and the neighbors were surprised that there was no one there,” she says. But she “doesn’t want to generalize.”

CDU leader Friedrich Merz had already raised the complaint about “social tourism” by Ukrainians about a year ago. He later said that they were only isolated cases. Germany has taken in around a million people from the country attacked by Russia, who can receive basic security if they are permanently present and accessible for their job center in Germany.

Wagenknecht left the Left in October and is preparing to found her own party with which she wants to run in the 2024 European elections. In the television interview, she argued – similar to the Union – to further reduce benefits for rejected asylum seekers: “Those who are not entitled to asylum should only receive very minimal benefits.” It’s not the poorest of the poor who come to Germany because “they can’t pay smugglers,” said Wagenknecht. Germany must send the signal to the world: “We can’t do it anymore.”
