At the beginning of the week, the federal and state governments reached an agreement on the issue of costs for asylum seekers. However, the Union sets conditions for a common migration pact. And the CDU leader renews his criticism.
CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt is attaching conditions to new talks between the Union and the federal government about a joint migration pact. “The ball is in the Federal Chancellor’s court. He makes the decision about further invitations from the opposition to talks,” said Dobrindt in the “Augsburger Allgemeine” (Saturday), referring to Prime Minister Olaf Scholz (SPD). “To do that, however, he has to recognize the seriousness and urgency of the situation. I’m not sure if that’s the case,” said Dobrindt.
“We remain prepared to deal with the current migration crisis together with the Chancellor,” he said. However, the decisions must lead to a real change in asylum. On Tuesday, Union faction leader Friedrich Merz (CDU) accused Scholz of a lack of willingness to cooperate with the opposition. “I don’t see any willingness on the part of the Chancellor at the moment to substantially continue the talks with us,” he said.
Pure test orders “cannot be done with us”
The federal government had declared that it wanted to examine asylum procedures outside Europe. Dobrindt said: “Pure testing orders like the one about third-country solutions in the decision with the Prime Minister cannot be carried out with us.” Illegal migration can only be stopped sustainably if the smuggling systems are broken. “If the asylum procedures and the granting of protection take place outside of Europe, migrants will simply no longer reach our social systems,” said Dobrindt. “This destroys the logic of the smuggling business because it no longer makes sense to pay thousands of euros for criminal smuggling.”
If the migration issue is not resolved, we will see in next year’s European elections that the AfD will become the strongest party, said Dobrindt. “Destabilization and emotionalization in society will continue to increase. This reveals the most problematic forecasts for the state elections in the East, and the question arises as to when a tipping point has been reached for German politics that can no longer be reversed,” said the CSU Politician. There will be state elections in Thuringia, Saxony and Brandenburg in 2024.
Merz criticizes the coalition
CDU leader Friedrich Merz also criticized the traffic light coalition’s migration policy again. Asylum procedures and refugees would have to be separated from those who wanted to enter the labor market. “So, to believe that we can suddenly solve our labor market problem with the refugees is an illusion,” he said in the Deutschlandfunk “Interview of the Week.” The traffic light wants to identify a small number of people from the large number of asylum seekers who are able and willing to work in Germany and can work. “That’s the wrong way.”
On Tuesday night, after months of dispute, Chancellor Scholz and the heads of government of the 16 countries reached an agreement on how to share refugee costs and agreed on measures to reduce irregular migration to Germany.
