The EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell once again sharply criticizes Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip. It is “unacceptable” to cut off the entire besieged civilian population from supplies of water, food, electricity and fuel, says Borrell in a video message to the congress of the Party of European Socialists in Málaga. It is clear “that we must support Israel in the face of the terrorist attacks it has suffered.” But Israel must “respect international humanitarian law and try to minimize the number of civilian casualties.” Also in self-interest, because “a strategy that ignores human losses will not work in the end. And peace is the best and perhaps the only security guarantee for Israel.”
In Gaza there are already “more than 10,000 (death) victims, half of whom are children,” explains Borrell. It must therefore be possible to defend the rights of Palestinians to freedom, security and dignity with the same vigor as the rights of Israelis. And it must be possible “to criticize the Israeli government without being accused of anti-Semitism.”
