Stern survey: Two thirds want to keep the Deutschlandticket for 49 euros

The federal and state governments are fighting over the financing of cheap local transport subscriptions. There is a risk of a price increase in summer 2024. This particularly upsets students, city dwellers and Green Party voters. But some people leave the topic cold.

More than eleven million people have subscribed to the Deutschland Ticket, which allows you to use local public transport and regional trains for 49 euros a month. Actually a success story. But the federal and state governments disagree about long-term financing. Even after a meeting in the Chancellery last week, it is unclear at what price the subscription can be offered from summer 2024. There is talk of up to 69 euros.

Have with you Germans have a clear opinion on the subject. As a Forsa survey for stern showed, 65 percent think receiving the offer at the current price of 49 euros per month is very important or important. 35 percent consider it less important or not important.

At second glance, however, there are interesting differences in the individual population groups. While 75 percent of residents of big cities find it important to receive a ticket for 49 euros a month, this figure is only 62 percent of Germans in villages or small towns. For schoolchildren and students, cheap subscriptions for public transport and regional trains are a priority for 85 percent, but for older people aged 60 and over it is only 59 percent. With the exception of AfD voters, supporters of all parties support an unchanged Germany ticket with clear majorities. At 89 percent, the proportion is highest for the Greens. 55 percent of AfD voters find the project less important or not important at all.

The data was collected by the market and opinion research institute forsa for RTL Group Germany on November 9th and 10th, 2023. Database: 1006 respondents. Statistical margin of error: +/- 3 percentage points.
